WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, is a treatment that focuses on the assessment, treatment, and management of various physical impairments, disabilities, and conditions. The goal of physical therapy is to help individuals improve their mobility, reduce pain, and increase overall function and quality of life.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN PHYSIOTHERAPISTS TREAT?

Physical therapists are trained to treat a wide range of conditions that affect an individual's movement and physical function. These can include:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions: Physical therapists can help individuals manage conditions that affect the muscles, bones, and joints, such as arthritis, osteoporosis, low back pain, neck pain, and sprains and strains.
  • Neurological conditions: Physical therapists can work with individuals who have neurological conditions, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injury, to improve mobility and function.
  • Cardiopulmonary conditions: Physical therapists can help individuals with cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure, improve their endurance and functional capacity.
  • Pediatrics: Physical therapists can work with children of all ages to help them develop, improve, and maintain movement and function. This can include treating developmental delays, orthopedic injuries, and conditions such as cerebral palsy.
  • Geriatrics: Physical therapists can work with older adults to help them maintain or improve mobility and function, manage chronic conditions, and prevent falls.
  • Women's health: Physical therapists can help women with conditions such as incontinence, pelvic pain, and pregnancy-related musculoskeletal issues.

HOW WILL THE TREATMENT PROCESS LOOK?

  • Assessment: Your condition and functional abilities will be assessed through a variety of techniques, including observation, questioning, and testing. This will help us to understand your strengths, limitations, and needs, and determine the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
  • Treatment: a range of techniques are used to help you to improve your mobility and function, including exercises, stretches, manual therapy, dry needling and even adjustments if needed.
  • Management: Together, your physiotherapist will create a long-term plan for managing your condition or disability. This may involve providing follow-up sessions, as well as helping you to learn self-management skills and strategies to leave along with your particular condition.
  • Education: We will give you homework of course! After educating you about your condition, treatment options, and self-management strategies, guidance will be provided on how to incorporate healthy lifestyle habits into their daily routine and exercises so you can do at home to keep getting better between your follow-up sessions.
